Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) is a state university in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the biggest universities in terms of number of affiliated colleges. Gautam Buddh Technical University was formed on 1 May 2010 from the bifurcation of the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh Technical University. The university is at the IET campus, and all but one government-owned engineering colleges in the state fall under its administration.

History

Gautam Buddh Technical University was formed when it was decided to split Uttar Pradesh Technical University in two parts to decrease the burden and to increase the quality of education in rapidly growing engineering colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Technical University was established on 8 May 2000 to provide technical education. UPTU was established under University Act according to which technical education includes education in fields of Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Town Planning, Pharmacy, Applied Arts and Crafts.[1] After the split, two new universities were formed: Gautam Buddh Technical University and Mahamaya Technical University.

Serving area

After the split, the new universities were given definite regions: The university affiliates the technical and management colleges of the Azamgarh, Allahabad, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Devi Paatan, Faizabad, Bareily, Lucknow, Varanasi, Chitrakoot Dham, Basti and Vindhyachal divisions from the academic year 2010-11 onwards.[2] This includes all the government engineering colleges of the state.
